Diet Schedule Help
« on: October 18, 2007, 05:12:35 PM »
Hi am a new tortoise owner and i am sort of confused with feeding. I have been feeding my tortoise: broccoli, romaine lettuce, spinach green beans and rose petals. Is this a good start? Or can anyone share their feeding schedule with me so i can get a better idea what to feed him?

Hi and welcome to the forum!  :)
Broccoli and green beans have too much protien for your tortoise. You can give spinach once in a while but not everyday because it stops calcium from being absorbed.
The diet sheet http://www.russiantortoise.org/russiantortoisediet.htm
and edible plant list http://www.russiantortoise.org/edible_plants.htm
will give you ideas of healthy foods to feed.
I feed my tortoise organic spring mixed baby greens(no spinach or chard) and a mix of weeds including dandelion (greens and flowers), rose petals, vetch, mallow, grape leaves, clover and much more.

Hi, I see you are posting in the Yellowfoot and Redfoot forum, all of the replies are for feeding russians.
Do you have a russian or a redfoot, they do not eat very many simialar foods.

For a redfoot or yellowfoot diets go to redfoottortoise.com, for russian diets russiantortoise.com
If you have a yellowfoot they eat just about the same as redfoots.

   Hope this helps.

There are two rules for feeding your tort, use one or the other: 1. Feed all your tort can eat in 20 minutes every day and when the 20 minutes is up remove any food that remains or, 2. Feed all your tort can eat in one hour every other day.  Following either one of these rules will keep your tort from becoming fat and growing too quickly.
