Redfoot Health Concern
« on: November 09, 2008, 04:24:31 PM »
We just acquired a redfoot tortoise today from a family who had no idea how to care for this tortoise. The tortoise is young and active (eyes are a little runny) which I am treating with antibiotics but my main concern is it appears that she has been overfed (with improper foods) and now has a bulging neck. She appears to have a hard time lifting her neck and walks with her head down. Is there anything that I could do other than feed her the correct foods and hope that she loses weight? Should I be concerned enough to make a vet appointment? Please help!!!

  Hello Katie
Since the tort wasn't kept properly and the way its holding its head, plus a swollen neck I would seek a vet in case its an ear or upper respiratory infection.  The eye tearing can be caused from the substrate being kept to dry, my red and yellowfoots will do the same thing if their substrate gets too dry.

Hi Katie

The most common cause of runny eyes is being kept too dry. Redfoots love it more on the wet side. For substrate us 1/3 sand 1/3 coir and 1/3  sphagnum moss

For care and diet visit http://redfoottortoise.com

Can you get pictures of the neck?
