Hugo & Olga get new winter quarters
« on: July 15, 2010, 08:44:06 AM »
I made this set up in a pinch when my girlfriends room mate gave her Russian up to us he is named Hugo. We then rescued a female and named her Olga. This all happened about a year apart from each other. I have always owned Yellow Foots and Red's with a healthy spattering of just about everything in between.
I currently still have my first Boa (sorry Tort people but yes I do love my snakes ) I had him since he was a neonate and now he is 29 years old. So I do understand long term pets. We also have 4 more Boas and One Red foot named Matillda (shes my baby)
But I digress and ramble on so.

I made this in a pinch as I said with everything I needed for under $26. Including labor since it was me ;)
I already had the UV lighting fixture and just needed to replace the bulbs with fresh ones as well as the water bowl. This is really just their winter quarters as in the summer they have free reign of our enclosed balcony (were three stories off the ground but its a walled balcony) which is about 10 foot X 6 foot.

I siliconed the sides of the tank to water proof it (out of habit to my other enclosures) prior to placing the contact paper in it and then I layered a sheet of plastic down before placing the substrate. I let the coconut bark dry out but can get it moist with a few glasses of water when ever need be this way.

Unfortunately I never got around to staining it.  though I might do it this weekend since the kids are outdoors anyway.

With the ramp I decided to silicone down some non-skid rubber matting for a good grip up. I also placed waterproof contact paper on the second level for easy clean up near the feeding bowl. I had placed some fogged plexi-glass so they don't try to walk through it on over the side. Since this has been made they never once tried to climb over it or walk through it,

An upside down plastic tub is their favorite cave but when Olga needs a break from Hugo's attention she makes her hidey hole under the feeding area Hugo is just big enough to have to work to get into it. I will raise it eventually but I like giving her a break from her shelled Romeo .

That's it folks

Thanks everyone :) I have been building enclosures for our neighbors for their new tort. I found out they were using a 20 gallon tank for a Adult Russian. I told them I would do it for free just to give their guy some roaming room, trying to talk them into giving up part of their yard for a turtle pen.

I love your set-up.  What kinds of plants are those in there?  I really want to put some plants in her reptarium.

Oh those are fake plants just for cover if they want to hide/feel secure but its probably more of a visual thing for me then for them as they arent afraid of too much in the reptile room. I had those from and old fish tank and got them decades ago at the pet shop I worked at but you can also go to your local dollar store and pick up loads of plastic plants(Easy to clean) for your set up. The only live plants I ever put in an enclosure are Pothos because the grow so fast I just drape on of my plants over the side and let the kids trim them up over the next few days.

I would be afraid she would try and eat the fake plants.  Can RTs eat pothos or do you just drape it out of reach of them?  I didn't notice it on the approved list.   Thanks!

My two never even glanced side wise at the fakes, they only needed to sniff them once to know its a no go.
Pothos is fine for red foots and yellows I have let mine eat them for years on end( I had a pair of Yellow foots growing up which sadly are 15 years in the grave and the other actually living at my cousins. but regardless i fed both my yellow foots and my current red without a single problem. As far as the RT they do not seem interested in them one way or the other so,
