Question about an indoor enclosure...
« on: December 15, 2009, 07:37:27 PM »
Hello! I recently purchased a RT from a lady who also has a 40 year old red foot tortoise for sale along with his 2 story cage.  We are already in love with the RT and are contemplating going back to get the red foot (he's about football size).  She is only asking $200 for him and his custom built cage - which seems like an awesome deal - especially since this tortoise looks to be in good health (zero pyrimading) and has a crazy personality (he likes to bang on the fridge until he gets some food, lol). My question is - there is carpeting in the cage and NO substrate- shouldn't there be substrate??!?? The tort seems to be very happy and like I said he looks very healthy. The lady had bark in with the RT which I have already changed - but I thought redfoots needed more moisture than RTs?? I just want to know what is going to need to be changed in order to have the funds available.  I ended up spending an extra $100 on the RT after buying him - and I wasn't expecting that!
Thanks!

I don't know much about the red foot torts, but I do know they are much more tropical than the russians.  They really like a moist substrate.  I don't know how you could keep the carpet moist enough without creating a mess!

Redfoots love moisture !

I really can't think of any tortoise species that would do well with carpet.

For substrate I use sand/coir/sphagnum moss. I keep it pretty moist.

Ok! That is what I was thinking - I was quite surprised to see him on carpet.  If we do end up going back to get him we will definately be changing that right away. Thanks!
