Found African Spurred Tortoise
« on: April 03, 2010, 01:07:35 PM »
I'm out mountain biking at the local nature preserve in Garland, TX, on Thursday and I see this monster lumbering down the trail, stopping to munch on some grass and weeds along the way.

Check this bad boy out:

He's still out there, I don't have anywhere to keep him, but he has been reported in the same general vicinity since last year.  Got to be either an escapee or another abandoned animal at Rowlett Creek Preserve.  I sent an email to the Texas Parks and Wildlife Department asking them to help me identify him.  The herp guy there said he is Geochelone sulcata and will never survive the winters here in north Texas, but he made it through this past winter and we had it bad here, so I guess he's OK.

Its something people do here in Chicago alot I have found ball pythons (which will not survive fall let alone winter) in the parking lot of Brookfield Zoo. twice in 6 years. people get them figure out that the novelty has worn off and think the zoo or nature preserves will take them. when refuse they just dump them in the parking lot and drive off hoping they can force the zoo to. I also found a box turtle floating in the middle of a lagoon I fish in, he was floating in the water and had a foot missing ( I think from a snapper but who knows) so i took him to my vet got the foot repaired kept him for a  year and then donated him to a travel Zoo my friend ran. I know he was dumped into the water originally as there is no shore line its a walled lagoon in Chicago next to Lincoln Park Zoo.

That is very sad that people just dump animals.  When we commit to a pet they are dependent on the choices that we make, some people make very poor choices. :(
That was wonderful that you rescued boxie and took him to a vet, a second chance at a good life! :)
