also not eating
« on: July 22, 2010, 04:34:19 PM »
so my tortoise (Bilbo) is not eating very much lately, and tending to stay buried a lot of the day.  i have a few theories, and i wanted to know if they are logical theories or if i should be worrying and call the vet.

one - it was very hot here recently, over 90F.  maybe tortoises aren't very hungry when it's too hot?

two - we have been very busy with our new house and have not been keeping our normal schedule of feeding and soaking him, and letting him explore outside his cage.  maybe he is mad at us?

three - we can't always find the grasses he should be eating, and we have had trouble growing them.  maybe he is spoiled by eating dandelion so often and doesn't want anything else?

four - our mercury vapor UV bulb died, and we replaced it with a compact fluorescent UV bulb.  maybe the person at the pet store lied and this is not a bulb we should be using?

All of those are possible causes.  I wouldn't worry except to check the bulb out with Joe.  Some of those are bad and can hurt their eyes.
Tilly and Tess live with their mom in sunny Southern Oregon.  Hatched by Dan during the summer of 2008.

Yes straight across the board all are possible. i am thinking it might be as simple as changing his regular schedule.
