Broccoli Leaves
« on: July 27, 2010, 11:58:25 PM »
A renovation contractor surprised me by bringing in a box of broccoli leaves and started feeding the leaves to the torts without asking me. I did a mini freak-out when I found out and told him to stop, and he kept arguing they were safe (don't know why he would because he doesn't know anything about torts).

Anyways, are broccoli leaves safe to feed? I've got an entire big box of it, and so at least was hoping I could use some of it up.

I read a previous post on broccoli leaves but it was confusing on what the answer is, so would appreciate someone's input here.

Thanks.

They are surely "safe". Its just a question of if they are nutritious, or not so much. They are certainly not poison or anything.

Joe, who is a doctor and Tort expert, says they arent great to feed, binds other nutrients or something.  I'm rather skeptical of that. Broccoli is in the same family as Kale and Collards, which Joe would say are great to feed. In fact, a small or mid size broccoli plant looks almost exactly like Collards, most non-gardeners couldnt tell them apart.  I'd like to see Joe site a study of an analysis of broccoli LEAVES, as I wonder if this has been done. Or if only the broccoli itself was tested, which is much different than the leaves.

Nonetheless, he is almost always right, so if he's wrong here, that would be unusual.

bottom line is they wont hurt your torts, but it seems they might not be a great thing to feed as a "staple" of their diet.

Thanks, CJC. Yes, I agree - it would be nice if there was more analysis done on the leaves, as the leaves can be very different from the flower head.

Right now, I've got a big box of the stuff sitting in my living room. So, as it is considered safe but not great,  I'm going to use up what I have and feed my guys. Even though it's not great, I figure there must be some nutritious aspect to them.  I probably won't feed it again after I use up what's in the box.

If you or others disagree with what I'm doing, let me know...
