Pellets
« on: July 28, 2010, 06:05:27 PM »
OK I have been reading all about proper diet for my RT and all about how pellets are not part of a proper diet. The place where I got my RT from was feeding him pellets and salad every day, he doesn't seem to want to eat much if anything and only goes for pellets.

My question is how should I switch him off the pellets? Should I just stop feeding him the pellets and only offer the salad? How long can he go with out eating before it is really bad?

no worries just stop feeding him the can go for a long time without food. So you stop the pellets and after say 4 days try something new and leave it there for him for a few hours, if he doesn't take it out and try again in two days, eventually his stubborn ways will change and he will start eating whats available to him. I have a vet who only feeds his RT's twice a week.

Its good to know that he doesn't have to eat all the time. I guess I am just used to my cats and dogs that have to eat a few times a day. I will try that tomorrow I'll just give him a salad and no pellets.

Yes I feed my Red Foot and my Russians every other day, always fresh water available though . Where are you from? Any local shops with a variety of greens ? You might want to try a bunch of different things just switch them up every couple of days and see what he takes to first.

That's right.  They can go a long time without eating and they are just fine (as long as they are not sick in the first place).  My Tilly hibernated for 7 months, no food, and she is fine.

Yay I caught Hermes eating today, as soon as he noticed me he went and hid I think he is a shy eater, but I haven't been giving him pellets. This is the first time he has eaten since then. Thanks for your advice.

Is there any kind of pellets that are ok?

Looking at the info, it's defintely a no. Stick with what's listed here http://www.russiantortoise.org/russiantortoisediet.htmand he'll be fine. Also, the carrots and sweet potato aren't good for them (too much sugar). Glad to hear that he's eating.
