Delicious....poop?!
« on: August 03, 2010, 04:03:46 PM »
So today I took out my Viola for some exercise before putting her back into her outdoor pen for the rest of the remaining daylight hours.

And I turned away for a moment and looked back and she was eating her own poop!

Is this normal? Does she have Pica or something?!

I'm quite shocked!  :o

I know that dogs eat poop when they are bored or if they didnt properly digest some of what they ate. You can give your dog pineapple and that should make his poop taste nasty so he doesn't want to eat it. As for the turtle/tortoise poop eating issues I have no ideas.

A book I have on Russian tortoises says this:

"Occasionally you might see your tortoise consume its own feces.  While this might be an unpleasant sight, this is mentioned here because it is a common practice among tortoises and is thought to be an important part of tortoise nutrition.  If you remember, the Russian tortoise is a hindgut fermenter, and many nutrients are wasted because of this.  It is suspected that consuming its own feces, called coprophagy, is a means of reducing the waste of available nutrients.  It is like running the food through the digestive process a second time to absorb those nutrients made available when the material was broken down the first time around.  Tortoises of many species will even consume the feces of other animals, both in nature and in captivity."

Thanks for the info. I'm a bit relieved. Glad she's not eating it out of any deficiency or anything. :3
