Russian Tortoise Faeces
« on: August 17, 2010, 09:33:21 AM »
I'm new to Russian Tortoises. I've found loads of useful info on the web, how to build a tort table, diet, behaviour etc.

However i can't find out too much about faeces. My tort seems to produce a mixture of firm, moist, brown stools and has produced one white cream thing.

I've found conflicting information in relation to the white creamy discharge?, is it just a standard thing, in relation to Uric acid, or is as some information suggests indicative of problems?

Thanks for any information offered!

The creamy thing is urates. Its normal.
From http://russiantortoise.net/care_sheet.htm

Quote
Unfortunately, many believe that tortoises naturally acquire almost all of their fluid requirements from its food and that therefore they do not require additional drinking water. Russians tortoises are indeed adapted to a semi-arid environment and its system of eliminating waste via uric acid rather than via urea is clear evidence of this. Uric acid can be eliminated using substantial lower levels of water wastage than can systems based on urea, such as those of mammals. Therefore, tortoises, such as Russians, eliminate nitrogenous waste products with far greater water conservation. Its behavior is also programmed to reflect this need not to waste precious water. The semi-solid, white deposits are expelled urates.
