Tortoise won't eat
« on: August 22, 2010, 04:05:42 PM »
I have 2 female russians living together.  my 2nd one, which I've had almost 3 weeks, for the first couple of days didn't eat.  Then for the next 2 she would.  I was out with her one afternoon and she ingested a small amount of the oleander plant.  I hadnt yet known how poisonous this plant was.  she was fine, was active and normal after, and took her to the vet anyway just to be sure.  he said she'd be fine, gave her a shot to hydrate her in each leg for the next 24 hours.  she's been active and normal ever since, except in the last 2 weeks the only time she's eaten at all was a few grass leaves outside.  other than that no matter what I feed her she'll either ignore it completely, walk up to it, smell it, hang around it for a little while, and eventually walk away.  my vet told me that a tortoise even her size (about 4") can go a couple of months without eating and they'll be fine, although he doesnt want that to happen.  anyone have any guesses? should I be worried? what should i do?

what have you been trying to give her? sometimes my shelby wont eat and i have to keep putting it in front of her face or kind of gently rub it against her nose and then she takes a bite and starts eating on her own. Have you tried radicchio or kale? It's my torts fav and they always go for it.

Can you give her some supervised time outside (if it's warm enough) and see if she would like some squash blossoms or other edible flowers?
Good luck and don't worry!  I'm sure she will come around.  She's gone through a lot in the last 3 weeks.  Perhaps she is just a bit shy after the vet visit and all.  You could try separating the two to make sure it isn't a territorial thing.
