Mustard Greens....Yuck.
« on: August 28, 2010, 10:52:09 AM »
So, I think I tried raw mustard greens for the first time at a farmers' market. Popped it into my mouth...omg...my mouth was on fire! I couldn't go further. It was hot, hot, hot.

I've never fed mustard greens to my torts before, but was considering getting it at the market. Question - if I can barely stand it, how do the torts handle it?? Is there a more spicy variety of greens than others? If so, is it okay for me to be giving them the spicy variety or not...?!

Thanks in advance.

Summer heat makes mustard greens spicier.  My torts love it.  Try cooking it next time (for yourself).

Just chop up the mustard greens and saute them in a pan with a little olive oil.  Cook them on low for 5 min.  You can add a little water to steam them a bit.  Or add them to chicken soup. YUM!

Well, thanks for the comments everyone...but for the record, it seems like my torts have the same taste buds I do. They hated mustard greens. I got a big bunch from the grocery story the other day for the first time. I was excited to let them try it for the first time. Anyways, what ended up happening --- All of them sniffed it for a while, and then took 2 or 3 bites max, then got a 'blah' look on their tortoise faces and walked away! Another tort sniffed it for the longest time and decided this food wasn't worth his while.

Oh well....now I have an entire bag of mustard greens I don't know what to do with. Oiks. Maybe I can try out the recipe you guys recommended for dinner this week...  :D

I have the same problem here with mustard greens.  I bought a bag of it and she won't touch it.  When I hand feed her, she'll take a bite of it and then realize I tricked her and walk away.  It's the same thing with collard greens and turnip.  She doesn't like them, but I keep trying.  Picky little tortoise!
